Book Abstract? (Be as descriptive as possible and include a tentative table of contents.)

Describe the purpose and importance of the project in roughly 100-150 words. This information should convey the ideas that motivate your work and present the essential features that will set your book apart. Include any special features (new techniques, never-before-published information, etc.). Please clearly identify the market need and how your book will fill that need. Please be sure to include a description of the level of knowledge you will be assuming of your reader, why you believe this book is needed now, details about what your readers will learn as a result of reading your book and how they will apply it (bullet points are useful).

In addition, please answer the following questions:

  1. If you had one sentence in which to convince someone to buy your book, what would you say?

  2. Would your project be appropriate for professional-level short courses? If so, please describe and list course names and samples of schools where it is offered.

  3. If your book includes a CD-ROM, please describe what will be included on it.

  4. What technology does your book cover (if any). What is the release cycle for this technology (e.g., annual). What version will you be covering. Are you on the beta team?

AUDIENCE

Describe as specifically as possible the primary audience(s) for your project, e.g. graphics programmers, multimedia developers.

  1. What level are these readers (researchers, practitioners, beginners, students, etc.).

  2. Approximately how many people are in the primary audience?

  3. Are there any secondary audiences for the project? What topics in your project will be of the greatest interest to each of these audiences?

Please list the selling points that you think are the strengths of your books on its own and as it compares to the competition.

COMPETITION

Please list any competing titles (with prices, page lengths, pub date, etc.) that your project will most closely compete with in terms of style, level and coverage? What will differentiate yours from these competitors? For instance, are the competing books printed in 4 color, etc. Please be specific.

MARKETING INFORMATION

  • List any conventions or trade shows that target audience attends regularly, as well as associations and societies in which they are members. (Include conferences from around the world.)

  • Please list contacts at companies that might consider BULK SALES of your book (purchases by companies, consultants, etc., of 50-2,000 copies for conferences, promotion or packaging with hardware or software). Please provide contact person, company name, and phone number or email address for each listing. Include your company, employer, or clients, if appropriate.
  • List any associations, user groups, or other special interests groups to whom your book could/should be promoted.

PRODUCTION CONCERNS

Please provide a rough estimate of the page length of the book using the following information..

  • How many manuscript pages do you expect?
  • Rough estimate of the number of Illustrations and indicate if any will need to be redrawn.

  • Color images (if applicable):
  • Use these numbers with the following formula to calculate book pages.
    Take the total manuscript pages (typed with 12 point, Times New Roman, 8 1 ⁄ 2 x 11, one inch margins, and double spaced) times .66 roughly. This will give you text pages. Then count each illustration as roughly 1 ⁄ 2 a page. Take your total illustration count, divide it by two and add to the text pages. Also include roughly 12 pages of front matter (copyright page, table of contents, etc) and at least 10 pages for an index.) All of this added together will you give you the final estimated book page count.
