Tips for Searching the Charles River Database
General Notes
-
All searches are case-insensitive.
Keyword Search
If you are searching the Charles River Media Title Database by keywords, note the following:
-
Separate keywords by spaces.
-
In addition to searching a predefined list of keywords for a title, the keyword
search will attempt to match user-specified keywords to title, author, subject,
and ISBN information for a title. For example, if you enter multimedia as
a search keyword, every title in the Multimedia and Graphics
subject area will be returned.
-
The keyword search matches on full words only. For example, radio will
match the title Radio Free America but not the database keyword radioactive.
-
Do not use English articles or conjunctions such as "the" and "and" in the
keyword list, as they will be ignored.
-
It is not necessary to include hyphens or apostrophes in keywords. For example, on-line
and online are treated the same by search, as are developer's and developers.
Title/Author/Subject Search
If you are searching by some combination of title, author, and subject information, note the following:
-
If any non-whitespace character is entered in the title or author field, the
engine will attempt to match on that field, as well as any others in the
section which are specified. If the field is left blank, the search engine will
ignore it. Likewise, if any option other than All Subject Areas
is specified in the Subject Area selection list, the engine will try to match
on subject.
-
A match will be returned if a title or author name in the database
merely contains the specified text. For example, java in the
title field will match the title Javascript Cookbook.
ISBN Search
If you are searching for the title associated with a specific ISBN, note the following:
-
Only an exact match on the provided ISBN will be returned.
-
At most one match will be returned.
